SECTOR: Forging Industry

Summary: a large forging company specialised in manufacturing big rings for wind power generation and aerospace industry needed a solution for large bars.

The main problem lay in handling the workpieces and production output as the output of the forging process was far bigger than the output of the sawing process.

Large forged bars are very irregular, which makes it impossible to use standard machines with roller tables. On the other hand, the way the steel was manufactured made it impossible to use carbide blades because of the bad surface on the outside; inserts in the material for this kind of blades would be critical.

Provided Solution: the problem was studied and the first thing we explained the customer was how to tackle material handling with a non-standard transfer machine. In the forging industry everything has to be very sturdy! This transfer table is a wagon that moves on rails to withstand heavy loads. This table is positioned outside the machine perimeter to facilitate loading and unloading of the pieces. In this case, the customer was offered fully automatic mode so the machine was able to work all day non-stop because the cut off pieces remain in the wagon without any need to remove them to continue working.

For the cutting process, first of all we designed a clamping system in the wagon, another vice after the blade and also a vertical clamping system before the blade, so as to suppress any vibration of the workpiece.

Independent arms provide the opportunity to always have the guiding system very close to the cutting area, which provides more rigidity to the blade.

Finally of course our zone cutting technology does the rest, adapting the cutting conditions to the workpiece cross section. The bigger the diameter, the greater the differences in cross sections.
